History

The Need

There are few government run shelters in Georgia and while these shelters are meant to assist, many women are forced out because of time constraints and other financial limitations.  From that point, the mothers have no place and no one to turn to and do not have the necessary life skills needed to support their family independently.  Many of them turn to prostitution in desperation as a means of financial provision.

The Beginning

KERA Georgia was established in May 2013 and the shelter was opened soon after by a group of volunteers who recognized the lack of space in Georgian government shelters for single mothers and single pregnant women.  One of the founders of KERA Georgia, who volunteered at one of the shelters on a regular basis, put out a call for help to assist a group of women whose time at the government shelter had ended. Several people, locally and internationally, answered this call and that is how KERA Georgia and the shelter came about.

The Result

The opening of the shelter as a privately run organization has helped many women and their children in the form of temporary housing, job training, spiritual counseling, medical care, material needs and life skills education so the women can become empowered independent mothers and successful parents.

We're official!

One year after opening the shelter, KERA Georgia was registered by the Georgian government as an official non-profit organization on April 24, 2014.
